PenMet Parks is committed to providing accessible parks and facilities and stewarding natural areas. Narrows Park features viewpoints and 1,315 feet of sandy-rock beach that face the Tacoma Narrows strait with excellent views of the Tacoma Narrows bridges and city of Tacoma.
Project Background
The 6-acre waterfront park has paved parking, grassy play and picnic areas, picnic tables, a non-motorized boat launch, telescopes and a gazebo overlook. These amenities are aging and present several challenges.
The asphalt path stops short of the beach, preventing beach access for many. The path requires upgrades to meet or exceed ADA standards. There are no permanent ADA-compliant restroom facilities. There is no ADA-compliant picnic shelter or compliant picnic tables. Viewpoints are showing their age.
In 2024, improvements at the park were identified as a capital priority.
Project Summary
The goal of the Narrows Park Accessibility Improvement project is to allow access to Puget Sound to people of all abilities. Water access is one of the highest priorities identified by the community in the PenMet Parks, Recreation and Open Space (PROS) plan.
The project will modify and extend the existing path to the beach, bringing it into compliance with ADA standards. It will install permanent ADA-compliant restroom facilities and a picnic area. It will make existing viewpoints more accessible and renew the telescopes. Drainage, gate and signage improvements are also planned.
