Background and Overview
In 1950, local community groups including the Horsehead Bay Community Club consolidated to form the Hales Pass Improvement Club. In 1959, after the 1938 WPA (Works Progress Administration) building was no longer needed as a public school, the Club purchased the property along with the 1940 WPA picnic shelter to serve the community as a civic and recreation center.
The site covers over 4 acres, including a ball field, picnic shelter, tennis courts, forest land, and the community hall.
In 1970-71 the Hales Pass Improvement Club donated the property to Pierce County to serve as a park. Pierce County Parks managed the property until 2010 when the park was transferred to PenMet Parks.
PenMet has two projects in progress at Hale Pass Park and the Arletta School House:
Replacement of roof (on the school building)
- Remove and replace school building roof, replace vents with ridge vent and low-profile vents, remove the chimney
- ADA access from parking to, and into the building, ADA parking, ADA access to restrooms, electrical systems, plumbing systems, kitchen facilities including appliances, well replacement, roof on shelter and walkway
The District hosted a special meeting-open house on January 27th, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the building currently located at 3507 Ray Nash Dr. NW, Gig Harbor WA 98335.
The budget for the project is anticipated as $521,986.25
